Dog Behaviorist

Dog Behaviorist

A term used by professional academics and veterinarians used to describe a professional who has a sound understanding of dog behavior and who is involved in modifying and managing the behavior of them in relation to specific attributes such as aggression, timidity, phobias, anxiety of separation and other obsessive- compulsion behaviors. Most dog behaviorists develop a sound understanding of dog behavioral attributes either through formal education, personal research or through experience. The skills of dog handling can only be exercised when there is good interaction between humans and dogs. Dog Behaviorists exploit their knowledge and understanding of the dogs to channelize their behavior in the proper direction. Usually they look to change the behavior of dogs in the original setting through observation and detection of the problems. Food and praises are used as the primary source of motivation for dogs. Likewise there are other aversive and coercive tools such as head collars, electric collars and correction collars that can be used to change the behavior of dogs.

Dog Neutering

Dog Neutering

Dog Neutering is a general term used to describe the removal of the dog’s reproductive organs. It consists of a surgical procedure whereby either all or a large part of the organ is removed from the dog’s body. The procedure is carried out because it helps control the growth of dog population to a significant level. It also helps control sexually dimorphic behaviors among dogs such as mounting and urine spraying. While the term neutering is used particularly for males, for females the word spaying is commonly used. Neutering also prevents the incidences of female dogs developing mammary tumors in comparison to those who don’t. While dog neutering has been brought about as a radical anti breeding agenda not all dog owners welcome the idea. They consider it to be an infringement of their rights. Apart from birth control neutered dogs run a high risk of developing reproductive tract infections.

Bernese Mountain Dog Rescue

Bernese Mountain Dog Rescue

The Bernese mountain dog rescue program is a program initiated to help the Bernese dogs in distress all around USA and Canada, not restricting other countries. Re- homing of these mighty dogs is the major goal of this program. First of all these dogs are rescued and sent to foster homes for a period of 3- 4 weeks. Here they are accessed for their temperament, obedience, tolerance to children and adults and house breaking. The dogs are first bathed and groomed and then taken to the veterinarian for check up. They are also vaccinated against any diseases and neutered before leaving the care. If the dogs prove successful in the program, a suitable family is located for their adoption. Among other objectives of the program is to educate dog owners to care and take responsibilities for their dogs and to inculcate the knowledge of dog showmanship and most importantly to protect the great Bernese breed.

Therapy Dog Training

Therapy Dog Training

Therapy dogs are used extensively in hospitals, nursing homes and mental centers to provide companionship to patients. They are specially trained dogs. However the ways they are trained are completely different from the way normal household dogs are trained. To become an official therapy dog in the US they need special training to pass the official AKC Canine Good Citizen Certificate Test (CGC) and need to meet Therapy dog International requirements to enter into the Therapy Dog Program. Specific characteristics required to become a Therapy dog includes calmness, friendliness, and obedience and good manners. They must be acutely aware of their surroundings and be very receptive to basic commands. Likewise a good Therapy dog must not show more than casual interest in other dogs. They must be taken to public places and parks so that they can get accustomed to the usual noises and crowds. They must also be well groomed and trained to the likings of the individual the dog will be serving.

Dog Seat Belt

Dog Seat Belt

Like humans safety for dogs is also an issue to comprehend with when traveling long distances in a vehicle. While all cars come equipped with seat belts for human occupants as an active protection mechanism, safety for dogs and other pets are often overlooked. Nowadays seat belts can be purchased separately for dogs so that they can be securely harnessed inside a car protecting them from any possible harm caused due to a crash or fatal impact. Dogs get more agitated inside a vehicle so a safety restraint is a necessity for them. With a safety belt in place it will restrict the free movement of the dog inside the vehicle protecting the interiors as well. Most smart harnesses allow for movement of the dog without suffocating or squeezing them. Moreover these safety harnesses are made up of quality materials that are both efficient and affordable. Some countries require all the occupants inside a car to wear seat belts and it is here that safety harnesses for pets become more than a necessity.

Dog Re-homing

Dog Re-homing

Most people like to own select breed of dogs such as the dachshund, Jack Russell terriers, poodles and so on causing a high demand which encourages breeders and puppy farmers. Re-homing a dog is an issue in a lot of countries where there is such a tendency of over breeding of dogs. A common misconception regarding rescued dogs is that they are not suitable for families because of their aggressive nature. While any breed of dogs end up in rescue homes some breed are even more likely because of their nature and negative connotations. Although rescue homes try to locate the best possible accommodations for these homeless creatures, lots of them stay for a longer period of time and some never make it out of these shelters.  Re-homing a dog often involves a lot of support and effort from these rescue homes. Some even offer to pay the medical expenses for any existing disease for the entire period of the dog’s life and have medical insurances for any diseases that may occur later.

Raised dog bowls

Raised dog bowls

Dog feeders or bowls should depend on the size of the dog, its body structure and feeding habits for sustained good health and comfort. While many think raised dog bowls or feeding stations might be appropriate only for large dogs, the fact is that feeders should always be placed at an appropriate height, be it any breed of dogs. A feeder placed at appropriate height aids in the digestion process. It also restricts the amount of air the dog intakes when gulping or chewing food. Leaning when eating causes an inappropriate posture and can be a cause of vomiting, choking and stomach bloat. Meanwhile it also causes undue stress on the dogs, neck, joints and hips. Raised dog bowls therefore lets your dog enjoy its food comfortably. They are available in different styles, shapes and sizes. You can choose the ones depending on your personal preference and the ones your dogs will feel comfortable in.  If you have a young puppy you can also look at adjustable feeders which will accommodate the dog’s growth and will last a lifetime.

Dog exercise pen

Dog exercise pen

Leashing your dogs all the time when travelling can cause stress among them. They tend to behave inappropriately in different surroundings and circumstances. Therefore a dog exercise pen should be carried along when travelling. The dog exercise pen is an enclosure meant to keep your dogs in one place. It also allows the owner to house train the dogs. The limited space in the enclosure helps the owner to manage the dog’s environment. However a dog exercise pen is not a suitable place to exercise your dog as the name implies. It should be used a control mechanism, not allowing your dog to roam freely in and around the house. Dogs should be taken outside for exercising on a regular basis. There are different sizes of dog exercise pens available for different types of dogs. The appropriate dog pen should be selected depending on the nature and size of the dog. The dog pens are also useful when the dog is ill and has undergone a recent surgery.
