Dog Neutering

Dog Neutering

Dog Neutering is a general term used to describe the removal of the dog’s reproductive organs. It consists of a surgical procedure whereby either all or a large part of the organ is removed from the dog’s body. The procedure is carried out because it helps control the growth of dog population to a significant level. It also helps control sexually dimorphic behaviors among dogs such as mounting and urine spraying. While the term neutering is used particularly for males, for females the word spaying is commonly used. Neutering also prevents the incidences of female dogs developing mammary tumors in comparison to those who don’t. While dog neutering has been brought about as a radical anti breeding agenda not all dog owners welcome the idea. They consider it to be an infringement of their rights. Apart from birth control neutered dogs run a high risk of developing reproductive tract infections.

Re-homing a dog is an issue in a lot of countries where there is such a tendency of over breeding of dogs. A common misconception regarding rescued dogs is that they are not suitable for families because of their aggressive nature. While any breed of dogs end up in rescue homes some breed are even more likely because of their nature and negative connotations. Although rescue homes try to locate the best possible accommodations for these homeless creatures, lots of them stay for a longer period of time and some never make it out of these shelters.  Re-homing a dog often involves a lot of support and effort from these rescue homes. Some even offer to pay the medical expenses for any existing disease for the entire period of the dog’s life and have medical insurances for any diseases that may occur later.

There are some simple ways in which fleas can be treated and prevented.  The most important part in handling fleas is to break the flea life cycle which can last anywhere between 3-4 months. Most of their life is spent in cool, dark and moist places such as the dogs undercoat. One of the best preventive measures is to groom the dog regularly. They should be washed with flea repellent shampoo or be treated with neem oil. A flea comb can also be used to brush them off. When brushed the fleas get stuck between the fine teeth after which they should be soaked in soap water. For infected and bite parts what is popularly known as hot spots should be treated with aloe vera or tea tree oil mixed with water.
