Shar Pei




When we talk of Shar Pei, it goes without saying that we are referring to Chinese Shar Pei or Chinese fighting dogs. Shar Pei is well known for its peculiar features such as blue-black tongue and deep wrinkles. Although there are many wrinkles in the Shar Pei puppies but as they grow, most all wrinkles disappear and grow into their skin. Known as world’s rarest breeds of dogs, the name of the dog Shar Pei comes from the Chinese word that translates into English as “Sand Skin” that refers to its short and rough coat texture.

Shar Pei have small and triangular ears with a muzzle that is shaped like that of Hippopotamus and a high-set tail, which also gives them a unique look. The coat is rough to touch and comes in three different types, namely, horse, brush and bear coat. The coat comes in many colors including red, fawn, sand, cream, black, lilac and blue. Shar Pei resemble Chow Chow or Puffy-Lion Dog due to the similar blue-black tongue. The average weight of Shar Pei is 18-30 kg and height is 18-22 inches. The average lifespan varies between 7-16 years. Shar Pei makes an excellent guard dog because of their suspicious nature to strangers but at the same time they have proved as good loving and family devoted breed of dogs.
