The Saint Bernard dog breed is centuries old and traces back its origins to the Western Alps. Named after the St. Bernard Pass found in the Alps, this dog breed emerged from the Tibetan Mastiff breed crossed with Great Danes and Great Pyrenees, all of Roman descent.
Large and strong, Saint Bernards are great as rescue dogs. Their sense of hearing is so keen that they can sense the approach of bad weather. Its size may be massive but its nature is very sweet and gentle. The Saint Bernard is very patient with children and do not get easily irritated, which is why it remains as one of the most favored family pets. Saint Bernards also make great watch dogs because of their fierce loyalty and protectiveness.
Prominent features of the Saint Bernard breed are its wrinkled forehead and high cheek bones. It has a large powerful head and strong muscular body that contribute to making it one of the world?s best working dogs.
