The Shar-Pei?s ancestry began in the country of China. It is an ancient dog breed primarily utilized for hunting, herding, and fighting. The Shar-Pei dog breed had nearly vanished to extinction in the past but fortunately has now come forth as one of the world?s most prolific breeds.
Shar-Peis are not sociable dogs. They are very independent and reserved. Because its old fighting habits remain, Shar-Peis often pick quarrels with its own kind as well as other animals. This fighting instinct can be an annoying and ?unsafe? characteristic for first-time pet owners. Early introduction to socialization is the first stage of training which can be quite a challenge as the Shar-Pei is very determined and stubborn in nature, attacking cats and livestock at will.
What makes the Shar-Pei stand out is its wrinkly skin on the face. The wrinkles make him look adorable and ?harmless.? Shar-Pei owners must take extreme care and maintenance in keeping its skin folds always clean.
Shar-Peis come in different colors namely, black, red, chocolate, silver, fawn, cream, sable and silver. Its life expectancy is from seven to twelve years.
