Central Asian Ovtcharka is a breed of dogs o f Russian origin, which is rated as #1 most popular breed in Russia. They are believed to have originated in the geographical area between Ural, Caspian Sea, Asia Minor and the Northwest border of China. Most of the species of Central Asians reside in Russia. However, few cross-breeds can be found in the surrounding countries such as Turkmenistan, Kazakhstan, Afghanistan and Uzbekistan. They are used for a variety of duties including livestock guarding, protection of owners, dog fighting and in cultural traditions.
Depending upon the species, Central Asians may have different sizes, types of head and types of coat. They are characterized by their very noticeable extremely flexible joints, false ribs, strong neck and specific head set. Healthy adults possess great strength and power than the average breeds. They are independent, curios and alert. Central Asian is as long as tall at its withers. They have short or moderately long hair with a heavy undercoat. Their coat comes in black and white, various shades of fawn and brindle. Head is solid with a short low-set neck.
