Estrela Mountain Dog is a breed of dogs that has been bred for guarding herds and homesteads in Estrela Mountains in Portugal for many centuries. They come in two varieties of coats short and long coat, which must have a coat resembling the texture of goat hair. Estrela mountain dogs weigh 90-110 pounds and stand tall at 25-28 inches. They are highly protective of the family and their property, friendly with children, stubborn and suspicious of strangers.

Long coat varieties of Estrela mountain dogs have a thick and slightly coarser outer coat lying close to the body. Coat may be flat or wavy but never curly. Undercoat is dense and slightly lighter in color than the outer coat. Short-coated breeds have a short, thick and slightly coarse outer coat with a shorter and dense under coat and proportionate feathering. Coat comes in fawn, wolf grey and yellow, with or without brindles and with black shading all over the coat. Estrela mountain dogs are a large breed of dogs with a pronounced ruff around their shoulders.
