Briard, large and muscular herding dog, is a centuries old dog from France. Many of the historical personalities and emperors including Napoleon and Thomas Jefferson, among other, owned Briard. Essentially a sheep guard and herder, Briard was often used by French Army as sentry and messenger due to its fine sense of hearing. Briard continues to remain popular as a herding dog and as a good companion dog. Briard has an overall stature of mid-sized, strong, powerful, and agile dog. Head and chest emphasize its strong and muscular build. Briard has a harsh, slightly wavy and double coat that comes in many dark or lighter colors. The long coat requires proper care and grooming. However, the long coat provides an attractive and a bushy appearance with a thick beard, mustache and eyebrows. Briard weighs around 75 pounds and stands tall at 22-25 inches. Average lifespan of Briard is around 10-12 years.
